Fax from a Brother printer using its built-in fax feature and a working phone line. Without a phone line, scan your document to a file and send it through Fax.Plus on your computer or phone. Direct scan-to-email is an option only when your model and email setup support it.

Check your Brother model before choosing a method. Built-in analog fax needs fax-capable hardware and working telephone service. For online faxing, use the scanner to create a file, then send it with Fax.Plus. Wi-Fi connects your devices; it does not replace the telephone connection used by analog fax.
Use this method if your Brother model has a built-in analog fax function and an active telephone connection. Menu names vary by model.
Direct sending requires your model’s Scan to Email Server feature, configured network and SMTP settings, and a Fax.Plus paid plan with email-to-fax enabled and sufficient sending allowance. The actual outgoing sender must match your authorized Fax.Plus user. A Scan to Email command that opens a mail app on your computer is a different workflow.
Receive faxes with a paid Fax.Plus plan and an assigned fax number. Open the received document on your computer and print it using your Brother printer. Automatic printing requires a compatible printer email service, configured recipients and enabled fax attachments. For HIPAA/PHIPA accounts with Advanced Security Controls, attachments are opt-in after owner/admin consent and individual activation; the receiving mail server must support TLS 1.2 or above. If attachments are unavailable or your printer does not support email printing, open the fax in Fax.Plus and print it manually.
Test your Brother fax machine’s sending and receiving setup before using it for an important document.
Use this option when your Brother scanner saves a file to your computer or opens a message in your mail app. Attach that file to an email sent from your Fax.Plus account address. Email-to-fax requires a paid plan, enabled access and enough credit or included allowance for the fax.
This route works when your Brother device can scan to a file, even if it has no fax hardware or direct email feature. Your computer needs internet access; your printer does not need a telephone line.
Use your Brother scanning software or the model’s scan-to-file function to save your document as a PDF. Open the file and check every page.
Use your phone’s camera to scan the paper document if your Brother printer is unavailable. You can also attach a scanned file already saved on your phone.
Email notifications alert you when a fax arrives. Receiving requires a paid plan and an assigned fax number. For HIPAA/PHIPA accounts with Advanced Security Controls, attachments are opt-in after owner/admin consent and individual activation; the receiving mail server must support TLS 1.2 or above.

To fax from a Brother printer without a phone line, scan your document to a file and send it through Fax.Plus on your computer or phone. A built-in fax modem is not needed for this route. Direct scan-to-email is optional and requires compatible hardware, configured email settings and paid email-to-fax access.
You can upload a Brother-scanned file through Fax.Plus on the web or mobile app using the limited free sending allowance. Eligible accounts receive a one-time allowance of 10 pages after mobile verification; destination and transmission duration can affect usage. Email-to-fax and receiving require a paid plan. Check your remaining allowance before sending.
A Brother printer does not automatically have a fax number. For native fax, use the number assigned to its connected telephone service. For receiving with Fax.Plus, use the fax number assigned to your paid account. The printer model number, serial number and IP address are not fax numbers.
Place the page face down and align it with the scanner glass markings. For native fax, choose Fax and follow your model’s prompts to scan and send the page. For the Fax.Plus route, save the scan as a file first, then attach it on your computer or phone. Check for missing or cut-off pages before sending.
Use your model’s Home, Stop/Exit or mode controls to return to its main screen or select another function. The available controls vary by Brother model. Check for an active transmission before cancelling a job. If the printer stays unresponsive, follow its manual’s troubleshooting instructions or contact Brother support.
Check the route you are using. Native analog fax needs working telephone service, the correct LINE connection and a valid destination number. For Fax.Plus upload, check internet access, the attached file and your sending allowance. For email-to-fax, check paid access, the actual sender address and the destination format. Read the final error before retrying.

Scan your document, send it with Fax.Plus and check the final delivery status. Use your computer or phone without a local fax line.
