Send a Fax with Your HP Printer

To fax from an HP printer without a phone line, scan the document and upload the saved file to Fax.Plus. For native HP faxing, use a fax-capable model connected to a telephone line. Direct scan-to-email requires a compatible printer and a paid Fax.Plus plan.

To send with the built-in fax function, connect a fax-capable HP model to its telephone line, load the document, enter the recipient’s fax number and select Send. Follow your model’s instructions for the document feeder or scanner glass.

Scan and Fax Using Your HP Printer

Use a compatible HP printer’s scan-to-email function to send a scanned document through Fax.Plus. This method requires a paid Fax.Plus plan and an outgoing email address that matches your Fax.Plus account.

Make sure the outgoing email address configured on your HP printer matches the email address registered to your paid Fax.Plus account.

Open the scanner lid, place the document you wish to fax, and close the scanner lid.

On the printer control panel, choose the Email option.

In the To field, type the destination’s fax number (along with the country and area code) followed by @fax.plus (example: +16692001010@fax.plus).

Send the email, then check your Fax.Plus fax status or delivery notification. Delivery time depends on the document and receiving fax line.

Use an online fax service from a computer

Scan your paper document with your HP printer and save it as a PDF or supported image file on your computer. Check that every page is readable.

Go to the Send Fax section in your Fax.Plus Dashboard, and type in the fax number of your recipient, including the country and area code.

Click Add File and attach the scanned document. Review the pages and add a cover page if needed.

Click Send, then check the fax status and delivery confirmation. A successful transmission does not confirm that someone has read the document.

Faxing directly from your email

If your HP scanner saves documents to your computer, you can attach those files to an email. Email-to-Fax requires a paid Fax.Plus plan and the email address registered to your account.

Make sure you use the email address linked to your Fax.Plus account.

Compose an email and enter the recipient’s fax number, including the country and area code, followed by @fax.plus in the To field.

Attach the files you want to send as a fax.

Click Send, then check the delivery status sent to your email.

How to send a test fax from an HP printer

Use HP’s U.S. fax test service to check a fax-capable HP printer connected to a telephone line. The return fax tests receiving on that line; this is not a receiving test for HP Mobile Fax or Fax.Plus Free.

Set up your HP printer for faxing, load paper, and make sure it is connected to the telephone line you want to test.

Set the fax header to the full ten-digit fax number for that connected line.

Prepare a one-page black-and-white test document and load it into the document feeder or place it on the scanner glass, following your model’s instructions.

Send the page to 1-888-473-2963 (1-888-HP-FAX-ME) in the United States.

Allow five to seven minutes for the return fax. If it has not arrived after ten minutes, check the line connection, fax header and receiving settings.

How to send a fax from your mobile?

Download and install the Fax.Plus app on your smartphone.

Open Send Fax and enter the recipient’s full fax number, including the country code.

Attach the file scanned with your HP printer, or scan the paper document with your phone. Review the pages and add a cover page if needed.

Tap Send, then check the fax status and delivery notification.

Print received faxes on your HP printer

Receiving requires a paid Fax.Plus plan and an active fax number. To print manually, download a received fax from your account and use your HP printer’s normal print options.

For automatic printing, confirm email-to-print support, an internet connection and enabled Web Services. HP ePrint is not supported on printers released after fall 2020. With Advanced Security Controls, email attachments are disabled by default; ask your admin to confirm attachment permissions and printer delivery.

Open Profile in Fax.Plus. Under General, select Edit in the Notifications box.

Next to Email, select Modify.

Turn on Received Fax Notification and choose the option to attach the fax.

Enable Multiple Email Recipients and add your compatible printer’s email-to-print address.

Select Confirm. Eligible incoming faxes are forwarded as email attachments to that address; automatic printing depends on your printer’s configuration. A copy remains in Fax.Plus.

Setting Up Fax on Your HP Printer with Fax.Plus

Before sending a fax from your HP printer with Fax.Plus, choose a method that matches your device. A scanner that saves a file can use web or mobile upload. Direct scan-to-email requires additional printer configuration and a paid plan.

Check your HP model’s specifications for scanning and, if you want to send directly from its control panel, scan-to-email.
For file upload, scan and save the document to your computer or phone. Your printer does not need a built-in fax modem or its own email address.
For direct scan-to-email, configure the printer’s outgoing email service and use the same sender email address registered to your paid Fax.Plus account.

Faxing Without a Phone Line

You don’t need a traditional phone connection to send a fax with Fax.Plus. Scan with your HP printer and upload the file, or use scan-to-email on a compatible model with a paid plan. Wi-Fi alone does not replace the telephone line required by a printer’s built-in fax modem.

Send scanned files by email

Scan paper with a compatible HP printer and send it using Email-to-Fax on a paid plan. Your printer’s outgoing email address must match your Fax.Plus account. Check the delivery status after sending.

Keep stored fax files protected

All stored files, including faxed documents, are encrypted at rest using 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Each user benefits from unique encryption keys. HIPAA-compliant faxing requires the Enterprise plan and a signed BAA.

Receive fax files before printing

A paid Fax.Plus plan with an active fax number lets you receive faxes online. Download the received document and print it on your HP printer when you need a paper copy, without relying on email-to-print.

Send scanned files without a line

Use your HP printer as a scanner and send the saved file through Fax.Plus on your computer or phone. You do not need a separate telephone line or a built-in fax modem for this online workflow.

Does my HP printer support faxing?

A built-in fax port or modem lets a compatible HP printer fax over a telephone line. Check your model’s specifications or user manual for fax support. If your printer only scans, you can save the scanned file and send it online with Fax.Plus; built-in fax hardware is not required for that method.

Can I use my HP printer for internet faxing?

Yes. Scan a document with your HP printer, save the file, and upload it to Fax.Plus from your computer or phone. A compatible scan-to-email printer can also send through a paid Fax.Plus account. An internet connection alone does not add these features to every printer, so check which scanning method your model supports.

Can I fax from my HP printer for free?

You can scan a document with your HP printer and use Fax.Plus Free to send it through the web or mobile app. Ten sending pages are granted once after mobile-number verification; they do not renew monthly. Receiving faxes, Email-to-Fax and Print to Fax require a paid plan.

Can HP Mobile Fax receive faxes?

No. HP Mobile Fax, accessed through the HP app or HP Smart where available, is a separate HP service for sending faxes. It does not support receiving. To receive with Fax.Plus, you need a paid plan with an active fax number. You can then download a received fax and print it on your HP printer.

How do I receive faxes on my HP printer?
