Get a Fax File with AI

Get a received fax as a file from Claude or ChatGPT with the Fax.Plus MCP connector: the whole fax as a PDF, a single page, or a quick thumbnail, so the assistant can read it, summarize it or write out its text.

Before you start

• Use an active Fax.Plus Basic plan or higher and an existing authorized Fax.Plus MCP connection.
• Use a compatible client with remote MCP support. These steps use Claude web; interface labels may differ in ChatGPT and other clients.
• MCP is unavailable for accounts with Advanced Security Controls, including HIPAA and PHIPA configurations.
• Confirm that the connection uses the account that received the fax.

How to get a fax file

1. Open a new chat. Use your connected assistant with Fax.Plus available.
2. Name the fax. Enter “Get my newest received fax as a PDF.” The assistant finds it in your inbox (list-faxes) and downloads the fax file (get-file: download fax file, PDF or TIFF).
3. Ask for one page. Enter “Get page 1.” The assistant downloads a single page (get-file-page: download single fax page).
4. Ask for a quick look. Enter “Show me a thumbnail.” The assistant gets a small preview image (get-fax-thumbnail: get fax thumbnail image).
5. Ask about the content. The assistant reads the page. Ask for a summary, the key details, or all the text.

Getting a fax file is read-only. It does not change, move or delete the fax.

Understand the result

A one-page fax is a small file; a longer fax is larger, so for a long document ask for a single page or for a summary of the pages you need. The thumbnail is the fastest way to check which fax you are looking at before you open it.

If the tool is unavailable or reports a failure, the file was not retrieved; that does not mean the fax is missing. Check the connection and the account, then try again. If the lookup returns no entries, no faxes match the request.
