What Is Automatic Redial?

Automatic redial is a fax feature that resends a transmission on its own after the first attempt doesn't go through, without the sender having to notice the failure and try again manually. On older fax machines, this was a fixed hardware behavior: a busy signal triggered a set number of redial attempts at a set interval, both defined by the manufacturer and rarely adjustable in detail.

Automatic Redial on Fax.Plus

Fax.Plus's equivalent is its Auto Retry on Failure setting. When enabled, it automatically attempts to resend a fax if the first try fails, whether the recipient's line is busy, temporarily unavailable, interrupted by a network issue, or simply doesn't respond. Unlike fixed hardware behavior, a sender can configure the number of retries (up to 3) and the delay between each one (up to 720 minutes), then save those settings so they apply the next time a fax is sent.

This is a different feature from Auto Resume on Partial Send, which continues a fax from wherever the transmission was interrupted rather than restarting it from the beginning after a communication error. Both apply the same way whether the fax is going to a physical machine or another internet fax connection. Once retries run out, whether the attempt ultimately went through is what the transmission verification report Fax.Plus generates for every sent fax will confirm.

A business supplies and equipment provider in California regularly faxes purchase orders to a supplier whose office fax line is often busy during peak hours.
