Transmission is the process of a fax moving from a sending device to a recipient: everything from the call connecting to the final page transferring across.

The Four Transmission Modes

When Transmission Doesn't Go Smoothly

A transmission interrupted by line noise or a dropped call can often still be recovered without starting over: an error-correction mechanism like ECM resends only the corrupted parts, and a separate retry mechanism can resend the whole attempt if the call itself failed to connect.
