What the ITU Publishes for Fax

The ITU's T-series recommendations are what make fax interoperable across brands and borders. That group includes the ITU-T fax standards themselves (T.30, T.37, T.4, and V.34), each covering a separate part of how a fax transmission works, plus T.38, the real-time fax-over-IP recommendation that lets a fax call travel over an IP network instead of an analog line.

Why a Standards Body Was Needed at All

Without a shared set of rules, a fax machine from one manufacturer would have no guaranteed way to exchange a document with a machine built by a competitor, or with an internet fax delivery service running on entirely different infrastructure. The ITU's recommendations exist precisely to remove that uncertainty, defining a common language every compliant device or service is built to speak.

A Common Case: A New Fax Service Working With Old Equipment

A company switches its outbound fax service to a new provider while several client offices still use decades-old physical fax machines. Because every device involved follows the same ITU T-series recommendations, the new service reaches those older machines without any compatibility work on either side.
